Event: Autism Awareness Day 2010

Summary: This annual gathering at the statehouse is where families, professionals, advocates and legislators meet to hear updates on current issues, concerns and legislative agendas. This event is hosted by Advocates for Autism Massachusetts (AFAM)

Event: The 1st Annual Celebrity Rock N' Hoops at the Basketball Hall of Fame, Springfield, MA

Summary: This event is sponsored by the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. Come watch Doug Flutie, Senator Scott Brown & his daughter, American Idol contestant Ayla Brown and local celebrities Derek Kellogg (Former Umass basketball standout and current men's coach) and Dana Barros (Massachusetts native, BC Alum and former member of the Boston Celtics) play basketball versus the Court Jesters comedy basketball group at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA, the birthplace of basketball. While you are there take in what the Hall of Fame has to offer, hundreds of interactive exhibits with skills challenges, live clinics, and shooting contests. And of course there is enough basketball history to impress the world's most avid sports fans!
After the game you will be entertained by the Flutie Band, musically, we're talking classic rock with Doug Flutie on drums. It will be a fun night for the whole family! Cost is $50.00 per person and includes admission to the Basketball Hall of Fame, celebrity basketball game and Flutie Band Concert.

Event: Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment of High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders
Date: 5/1/2010
Summary: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in every 150 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder. Many have either high-functioning autism or Asperger's Syndrome, which are complex, brian-based conditions that profoundly affect the lives of individuals and their families. These two conditions can be difficult to diagnose and treat because their symptoms very tremendously amoung individuals, affecting the realms of emotions, thinking, and behavior. Diagnosis and treatment are further complicated by the fact that these disorders often co-occur with other mental health conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD and anxiety.
While there is no cure for autism, researchers at MGH and around the country are studuing many approaches to improve the lives of individuals with autism through educational, vocational, and behavioral interventions, as well as medications.
We invite you to learn about the latest research developments in diagnosing, treating and improving the quality of life for pre-teens, adolescents and young adults diagnosed with high-functioning autism or with Asperger's Syndrome.

Event: AANE Presents the 2010 Gala Benefit "Laugh Out Loud"

Program Title: Winter Session of Special Musicians*
Program Summary: All classes are open to individuals with special needs and their siblings at a discount of $15 for every sibling in the class. Classes are first opened to those who particapated in the most recent season of Special Musicians, open enrollment for all classes will begin on 1/1/2010 on a first come, first served basis. Enrollment for returning students begins immediately. Registration forms and parent applications are available on the website listed below. Program Title: Staying Safe: Looking at Relationships with Sally Fogel
Program Summary: These seminars presented by Sally Fogel, a specialist who is trained and familiar with teens on the autism spectrum, will focus on issues surrounding sexuality, relationships, and safety. The participants will focus on their emotional and physical safety and will examine topics related to the many relationships in their lives. Program Title: Ice Hockey and Ice Skating* & **
Program Summary: Mark Kelly, Director of Special Needs for Newton, along with volunteers from the BC Women's Hockey Team are hosting a this opportunity for youth and adult participants to learn to play hockey or ice skate. Program Title: Basketball*

Program Summary: The Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston presents a weekly swim class for children with developmental, perceptual, and/or physical challenges. Children, ages 2-22, are grouped by skill. Classes are taught by an adapted aquatics director. Program Title: Fun and Games*
Program Summary: The Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston presents a wonderful opportunity to learn skills related to playing games with one of our most popular instructors. The program is designed to meet the needs of children who may benefit from a smaller class due to attentional issues or mild developmental concerns. Two classes will be held. one ages 2.9 to 5, and the other 6 to 8 years of age. Classes will be held at BAMSI Early Intervention site at Brockton and fees will be $20.00 per class.

Program Title: Social Skills
Program Summary: The Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston presents a social skills program is designed to meet the needs of children who could benefit from additional instruction in how to engage their peers in positive social interactions. This program is focused on meeting the needs of children diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome or Non Verbal Learning Disabilities, however, children with other diagnoses will be considered. A screening interview is required proir to acceptance into this program. This class will be held at the Braintree Teen Center on Pearl Street in Braintree and the cost is $30.00 per class.

Program Title: Teen Challenge* & **
Program Summary: The Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston presents a unique program for teens aged 13 to 21 with developmental challenges who miss some of the life skills that their peers seem to learn so effortlessly. This program is appropriate for teenagers diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome or Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities. These classes will include field trips into the community to practice the newly acquired skills. During the upcoming year the follwing topics will be addressed by the two current groups: Group A - Transition from High School and beyond; Group B - Dating and all it's complexites. Each class is $40.00 and will be held at the Braintree Teen Center

Program Title: Teen Friendship Group**
Program Summary: The Jewish Community Centers of Greater Boston presents a friendship group designed to meet the needs of teenagers, ages 13-21, who have mild to moderate developmental challenges. The teens meet every other week with group advisors to plan their leisure time activities. They will also participate in regular community field trips. Past activites have included the use of the JCC climbing wall in Newton, hiking the Blue Hills, bowling, and visits to the MFA and Fuller Art Museums. The group will meet at BAMSI Day Hab facility on Stoughton.

Program Title: Bridges to Independance: Friends, Work, Life* & **
Program Summary: The Bridge Center in Bridgewater presents a new and unique program for teens and young adults aged 14-25 with developmental challenges who miss some of the life skills that their peers seems to learn so effortlessly. This skill development program is appropriate for teenagers/young adults diagnosed with PDD NOS or Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities. These classes will include group based career and life skills education and practice, vocational experiences around campus, supported time to socialize with peers. Two modules available: 1-23-3/27/2010 and 4/3-6/5/2010.

Program Title: Hockomock YMCA Integration Initiative*
Program Summary: This program allows children of all abilities to come together as a group and play. The Hockomock area YMCA offers a welcoming environment for individuals with special needs. Children learn from "typically developing" peer role models and the program focuses on teaching tolerance, acceptance, mentoring and respect for all children. Activites include Fun Days, Aquatics, Challenger Sports, Fun-Athon, Real Deal and PIT Crew.

Program Summary: The Price Center presents Afternoon Social Club Encouraging Networking and Transition (ASCEND) for those ages 14-22 years old with Developmental Disabilities. These workshops will be most helpful for family members who cannot be gainfully employed and are not likely to receive full residential support form DDS. The goal is to provide families with the current reality of what subsidies may exist, how we access them, how we can create short and long term strategies for create affordable opportunities for our childrenand simultaneously provide them the chance for contiuned independance. Families who have children between ages 14-22 are urged to attend, but all are welcome.
